Velux Solar Hot Water System
Generally speaking, for the New England climate there are two primary collector types that are used: evacuated tubes and conventional flat plates. Most conventional flat plates mount in the same manner. A rack of some sort connects to the roof, the panels mount to the rack sticking off the roof, and the plumbing is exposed. Velux, the well known manufacturer of skylights, has been making solar hot water collectors in Europe for many years. MaineStream Energy Alternatives, Inc. (Saco Solar Store) has been chosen as the first dealer in Maine to offer these systems.
The Velux collectors are unobtrusive and perhaps even attractive. The collectors actually look like skylights when mounted onto the roof and are flashed using the same tried and tested method as a Velux skylight. One advantage to the Velux approach is that it eliminates the question of whether you should mount collectors on a roof that will need to be replaced in a few years. Because the shingles are cut back and flashed around the collectors, a new roof can easily be installed later with the collectors in place. Our installer crew has been thoroughly trained and approved by Velux to install these systems.
The fluid supply and return lines are in the structure under the collectors when attached to the roof. It makes for a clean looking installation.
